Gender Systems vs Neogender Umbrellas Discussion

gender systems vs neogender umbrellas

there’s been a lot of gender systems coined recently and a lot of neogender umbrellas coined recently, and several things that seem to be both/are unclear on which they are. it’s been pretty confusing for us& regarding how to tag and organize things, and while we know most people don’t stick to definitions and categories as closely as we do, we want to make sure we’re on the same page as everyone so we can better run the archive

with all of that said: how do y’all classify a gender system? how do y’all classify a neogender umbrella? do you see a difference? do you think it matters? just in general, what’re your thoughts about this? we& want to start a conversation about this to make sure that there aren’t miscommunications that lead to arguments down the road ^^;;

tagging some people who we know coin neogender umbrellas and/or gender systems to ask for your thoughts, but don’t feel pressured and you can ask to be untagged!! @revenant-coining @hypnosiacon @kirby-in-wonderland @kenochoric @aetherive @catgirlprotag @page-2-ids @cielos–angelphilia

for the record, the way we currently see it:

a gender system has a dedicated suffix {usually} and tends to be more specific than a gender umbrella. while anything related to [x] might go under the [x] umbrella, only genders that are related to [x] in a specific way go in the gender system. for example, the gendergod system is for genders that feel like a god of something, but not genders that are generally related to gods

a neogender umbrella is a larger, wider umbrella term, on the same ‘level’ {in our visualizations} as xenogender, male, aporagender, kenochoric, etc. there are less rules to it, and it casts a wider net. a neogender umbrella typically has its own terminology, in particular its own gender nature and/or gender quality. a gender doesn’t have to follow certain rules or even necessarily be related to anything under the neogender umbrella to be experienced in that way, it simply has to have that gender quality or be aligned to that neogender umbrella

kenochoric-moved:

tbh i’d say that explanation is pretty accurate

gender systems are more simplified, with genders that are often like “x, with something else added on.” they often feel more like the original form is the gender, and all the subtypes are almost modifiers of the base form. like, the prince system or something? you’re just modifying the type of prince you are, like a blue one or one with wings or something. that’s what makes them a system. they’re not broad, they’re quite straight forward in a single idea, topic, or theme. they can be closed loops a lot of the time too, like already “done”

neogender umbrellas are broad and can group things under it more on vague ideas. like with kenochoric, a gender doesn’t really haaaaave to be anything in particular to count. if it feels kenochoric then like sure why not. same with like, luxine, xenogender, etc… and nobody cares what you name it or if it uses the right suffix
