Term coined: Nectogenic

Originally coined 10/6/22 on twitter

“Nectogenic” is a system that was created by connection to their Indigenous/Two-Spirit identity. This includes, but is not limited to: community, ceremonial and spiritual roles and responsibilities, and connection to land.

It is a term to be used exclusively by Indigenous systems and relates particularly to Two-Spirit identity. Identifying as Two-Spirit is not a requirement to use this term, only Indigenous identity.

The term may overlap with other system origin terms but is designed for Indigenous systems who feel other terms do not fully encompass their origins. It does not specify the intentionality or lack thereof, or the trauma history of the system, and it is not designed to. Systems of any other origin may use this term as long as they are Indigenous.

“Nectogenic” is taken from Latin “necto” meaning “created by connection, interweaving, binding, ties.” It was chosen to emphasize connection to community and Indigenous identity. It can be translated into the Indigenous language of the speaker by using past tense to say something like “I/he was weaved/woven” or “I/he was weaving” or plural forms such as “we were weaving.”

You do not have to be 100% sure to use this origin term, only if you feel you may have been created by Indigenous/2S identity. No gatekeeping of this term from Indigenous people is allowed. You do not have to always identify with this term. You may identify with it collectively or individually to describe system members who were specifically formed this way.

The sun, moon, and flower Indigenous plurality symbol is influenced by the four interlocking rings symbol of plurality and sun and moon 2S symbol. The flag can be used with or without the symbol. You may use the symbol with or without the flag.

Credit is not necessary to use this term or flag for personal use. If you’d like to make your own version, please credit creator as “Alitsanosga Nebulae” “Alitsanosga of the Nebulae System” or “The Nebulae System.”
