Pro-Consang Discussion

anon: Can you explain why you find incest acceptable? I’m not trying to be mean, I just can’t understand how you can justify incest, especially when I have siblings of my own. It’s just disturbing.

It’s pretty simple, actually. I accept and support consanguinamory (incest) for the same reason I support

and accept polyamory, gay and interracial relationships—because I believe love is love and consenting adults have the right to love however they see fit. Whether or not YOU or anyone else finds the situation disturbing is not part of the equation, since you aren’t in their relationship.

Make sense? Here’s an example:

I hate mushrooms with a passion—I think they are fucking disgusting and the thought of anyone actually eating a fungus disturbs me to no end. Does that mean no one in the world should eat mushrooms? Hell no—lots of people love them and can’t get enough of the little fuckers.

My disgust/being disturbed has absolutely no bearing on other people’s choices—and that is the way it should be.

Same thing applies here. Some people are disturbed by gay relationships. Some people are disturbed by seeing a black woman (or man) with a white man (or woman). Some people are disturbed by the thought of three (or more) people being involved in a relationship together. And some people, like you, are disturbed by the thought of siblings falling in love with each other, despite their familial ties. But just like my intense abhorrence of mushrooms… NONE OF THAT MATTERS in the grand scheme of things because one person’s preferences or dislikes do not dictate another person’s rights.

The blog @fullmarriageequality says it best:

“Equality just for some is not equality. A person has the right to not only have a relationship with, but marry the consenting person or persons of his or her choice. It is time to allow everybody to exercise this right. We can get there if we have solidarity. Don’t just stand up for your freedom to marry; stand up for the freedom for all to marry. Don’t just be an ally for a friend’s right to a same-gender marriage; stand of the rights of all. That’s true marriage equality.

You don’t have the like what other people choose to do. If you don’t want a same-gender relationship, or a poly relationship, or an interracial relationship or a consanguineous relationship, or you do not want to get married under any circumstances, that is your choice and you have that freedom. But you should support the rights of other people to choose for themselves. Love is love.

Hope that clears it up—if not, feel free to shoot me another message.
