“Choice-Recovery

Choice-Recovery is a stance on recovery, mostly in reference to disorders, paraphilias, self destructive habits or lifestyles, and drug/alcohol use.
Choice-Recovery refers to the idea that nobody should be forced or coerced into any sort of recovery, especially if they are not causing harm to others.
Basic Beliefs of being Choice-Recovery include…
Using force or coercion to make others recover can actually hinder their recovery by associating recovery, or even just receiving help, with being stripped of their autonomy. Autonomy includes all choices you make for yourself, physically, mentally, and with your environment. Removing one’s right to choose regarding recovery, including ones right to choose a preferred form of care, is anti-choice and anti-autonomy. Even if one’s actions hurt others, recovery cannot be forced. Steps to prevent harm to others can include encouraging or suggesting recovery, but forcing recovery is not a dependable or effective method in mitigating harm to others.
As the coiner, I’d like to add my thoughts, but these are not as crucial to Choice-Recovery as the Basic Beliefs.
Paraphilias being disordered should be decided based on the actual disorder (lack of function, disruption or distress, etc) it brings to one’s life, not whether acting upon it would be harmful or not.
Those who cause harm to others as a result of not recovering should not be encouraged or simply left to harm others, I just believe forcing recovery is, as I said, not dependable or effective.”
